Plant Associate/Relief Route Driver

Purpose of Position

The Plant Associate/Relief Route Driver is responsible for performing a combination of job duties associated with the industrial gas and welding supply business. The position will safely move and fill compressed gas cylinders and support the overall responsibilities within the plant and delivery departments with high efficiency and accuracy. It is our hope that the person in this position would also perform as a back-up CDL driver when the company is in need to accommodate delivery department vacations and time off. In doing so, this position would provide top service to customers at business sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of Plant Associate

  • Load compressed gas cylinder/tanks on vehicles and record type/quantity of cylinders
  • Assist drivers with loading and preparing orders for the day
  • Maintain appearance by painting cylinders from time to time and properly label with barcode
  • Fill cylinders with numerous gases such as Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, Helium, etc.
  • Maintain cleanliness of plant to ensure safety of all employees, vendors and visitors
  • General building and grounds maintenance as needed and requested by management

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of Relief Route Driver

  • Serve as back-up driver on standard routes of about 50-100 miles/day and deliver merchandise to customers in a timely manner
  • Gather products and scan orders for the day to load trucks with materials for delivery route
  • Operate company vehicle in a professional, safe and courteous manner following all traffic rules
  • Serve as a liaison to sales and other managers, reports on progress, communicates to appropriate personnel to enhance customer service/support
  • Perform daily safety inspection on truck; check turn signals, tires, DOT manifest preparation and complete paperwork
  • Ensure delivery of appropriate merchandise in accordance with customer invoices
  • Complete dock backings and tailgate backings for regular stops on route. Checks empty cylinders and replaces at customer site; have delivery tickets signed to perform sales/customer service tasks
  • Return credit merchandise with appropriate paperwork and inform management of such return

Non-Essential Functions

  • Perform other job duties as assigned and fill in for other employees in their absence

Education, Experience & Skills

  • High School diploma or equivalency preferred
  • 1-3 years of truck driving/delivery experience desired
  • Class A licensure with Hazardous Endorsements, Transportation Endorsements and Air Brakes or willingness to get such licensures
  • Basic knowledge of gases, cryogenics i.e. pressure and compatibility is a plus
  • Ability to make decisions based on facts and attain precise set limits
  • High attention to detail when dealing with tight tolerances and standards
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and basic customer service experience

Equipment Used

  • Safety gear such as steeled toe boots, safety glasses, gloves and hard hat when appropriate
  • Double axle truck with tailgate lift, tractor trailer, 2-wheel dollies, liquid cart, handcarts and pallet jacks
  • Vacuum pumps and high-pressure pumps
  • Various plant tools including but not limited to a scanner, air ratchet, scraper, paint sprayer, pumping rack, heat gun, hand trucks, chain hoist, wrenches, scales, spray washer, pressure gauges, gas metering devices, shot blaster, test equipment, etc.

Job Specifications/Requirements

  • Be able to stand on your feet 7 to 8 hours a day with lots of walking, twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, grasping, sitting and repetitive motions
  • Frequent lifting of 10-20lbs is required, may at times lift up to 75lbs
  • Reoccurring pushing/pulling 150lbs
  • Ability to work indoor/outdoor with hot summer and cold winter conditions where high noise levels are possible
  • Capable of traveling 50% of your day delivering products and working extra hours as needed
