Plant Associate/Cylinder Handler

Position Summary

The plant associate/cylinder handler is responsible for performing a combination of job duties associated with the compressed/liquefied/cryogenic gas business. The position will safely move and prepare cylinders to support the overall responsibilities within the plant and delivery departments with high efficiency and accuracy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Load/unload cylinders/tanks on vehicles and record type and quantity of cylinders
  • Assist drivers with loading and preparing orders for the day
  • Paint cylinders according to requirements with paint sprayer in designated area
  • Ensure protection caps are secured over valves and cylinders are labeled correctly
  • Maintain cleanliness of plant to ensure safety of all employees, vendors and visitors

Other Responsibilities

  •  Remove valves and install reconditioned valves on cylinders
  • Examine returned cylinders for surface defects and roll or walk cylinders to designated work areas
  • Prepare and place bar codes and labels on cylinders or tanks
  • Support in filling cylinders with numerous gases such as Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, Helium, etc.
  • Vaporize liquid gases and fill tube trailers when needed
  • Complete cylinder paperwork according to shuttle deliveries
  • Assist in pumping from bulk forms to smaller cylinders according to customer orders
  • May perform routine maintenance on various equipment
  • Assist at city desk, shipping and service repair departments
  • Perform other job duties as assigned and fill in for other employees in their absence

Education, Experience & Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Basic knowledge of gases, cryogenics, i.e. pressure and compatibility is preferred
  • Industry experience such as handling cylinders is desired
  • Certified forklift operator is a plus
  • Ability to make decisions based on facts and attain precise set limits
  • Must have strong attention to detail
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and basic customer service experience
  • Must be organized, have good reasoning skills, math aptitude and time management skills

Equipment Used

  • Safety gear such as steeled toe boots, safety glasses and gloves
  • Vacuum pumps and high pressure pumps
  • Company provided plant equipment such as two-wheel dollies, liquid cart, scanner, air ratchet, scraper, paint sprayer, pumping rack, heat gun, hand trucks, chain hoist, wrenches, scales, spray washer, pressure gauges, gas metering devices, shot blaster, test equipment, etc.

Job Specifications/Requirements

  • Be able to stand on your feet 7 to 8 hours a day with lots of walking, twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, grasping, sitting and repetitive motions
  • Ability to “walk” cylinders daily
  • Frequent lifting/carrying of 10-20lbs is required, may at times lift up to 75lbs
  • Reoccurring pushing/pulling of 75lbs
  • Ability to work indoor/outdoor in moderately warm or cold conditions where high noise levels are possible
