For commercial walk-in refrigerators and freezers, the calculation scales with the unit’s dimensions. Add the length and width of the unit in feet, then divide by four for refrigerators or three for freezers, giving you the number of 50-pound blocks needed per day. A 4-by-8-foot walk-in freezer, for example, needs approximately four 50-pound blocks, or 200 pounds, per day. Larger units and older, less-insulated equipment will require more.
